Getting Girls Outside [to find their strength] via Gear and Cheer
There are so many events, functions, fundraisers, and always ways to spend your money. What if you knew that ALL the proceeds from an event would go toward getting girls outside, helping them find their voice, their strength and trust within themselves? That’s why we offer the wild, challenging, and loving support of our programs – Girls’ Wilderness Adventures, our NEW after-school climbing program Girls Lead for Life, and our NEW high school Girls’ Advisory Board. We are serving over 100 girls this year, and still, have never turned away a girl in financial need.
Gear & Cheer is so much more than a fundraiser with a cute name.
Here is what you need to know before coming out on October 5.
What is Women’s Wilderness all about?
Remember the old expression, “Teach a girl how to climb and you will feed her soul for a lifetime?” We are here to do just that and more. Our mission is to strengthen the courage, confidence, and leadership qualities of girls and women through challenge and support of group wilderness and community based experiences. Why? Because we want to make the world a better place by empowering people to be their best selves and know that the wilderness creates unique opportunities to do just that.
That sounds nice, but what does that really mean?
The wilderness has incredible powers to help us discover our best selves. Access to the wilderness and outdoor recreation, unfortunately, is riddled with barriers that make it extremely difficult for some populations to experience. Women’s Wilderness provides bridges over two of the biggest barriers to access: gender expectations and financial hardship. Women’s Wilderness addresses the general lack of an outdoor female community by creating one by serving that population exclusively. In addition, Women’s Wilderness provides financial aid to ANY girl who desires to come on course but cannot due to financial burdens. Due to the generosity of the community, Women’s Wilderness has NEVER turned down a girl because she cannot afford to come on course.
How are we doing that?
The Financial Aid Fund provides full and partial scholarships to over 50% of our course participants. In 2017, this meant 60+ girls got to climb, hike, explore and dream in ways that were made possible by this scholarship. While these funds are often the only reason why a girl can come on a course, they also provide emotional support and confidence in saying, “You are awesome, and we want to give you tools to help discover and realize your potential.”
Tell me more…
The Girls’ Wilderness Adventure Program offers courses for girls ages 8-18 to explore and grow their strength, courage, and leadership skills on day and overnight courses ranging from 1 to 10 days long. Activities include rock climbing, camping, backpacking, canoeing, art projects, team-building and leadership initiatives, and more. Our recipe of strong female instructors as role models, wild places away from phones, media, cliques, and school pressure, and girl-positive curriculum, helps girls discover their best selves and feel good about who they are.
How you can contribute:
On any day of the year, you can make a donation HERE. However, on October 5, we are hosting our annual Gear and Cheer gala event at the Boulder Jewish Community Center. Tickets are $65 which also includes dinner from Sherpa’s and live music by the wonderful Lois and the Lantern. All proceeds from the auction and ticket sales will go directly to providing financial aid for girls who want to come on a course in 2018. For more information, check out our event page on Facebook which has details about the AMAZING items up for auction. Tickets can be purchased here.
Come see the impact
Come listen to girls share THEIR story and see for yourself the very real impact your support enables. We will have a time for girls who have come on a course with us share about their experience before, during, and — most importantly — after.
In case supporting saving the world wasn’t enough…
If supporting Women’s Wilderness and funding life-changing opportunities for young women wasn’t enough good things in one night, your ticket also includes the best Nepalise food Boulder has to offer from Sherpa’s and live music from Lois and the Lantern. There will be a live auction featuring GABF tickets, a Baja Sea Kayaking trip, an adventure in Salida, a wine-tasting for you and 30 of your best friends, a Movement Climbing 12-month membership or 3-Day Avalanche saftey course and more . . . AND a silent auction with items from the best of Boulder, all the hottest outdoor brands, and gear to prepare YOU for any wilderness adventure (plan out all the great stuff you will score via the auction link). Sounds like the best date idea you’ve had in ages. 😉
“There in spirit” tickets
Cannot make it this year? Or, do you know someone who would love to come, but cannot miss their monthly book club again? Send them over HERE where they can purchase a “There in Spirit” ticket [by clicking on the Tickets button] whose proceeds will also go toward these amazing scholarships. Go ahead and share the link with your friends, your mom, and your friends’ moms, to remind them just how cool you are.
All people from all walks of life are welcome to join us
