Outdoor Girls

OUTDOOR G.I.R.L.S. (Girls Immigrant Refugee Leadership Series) is a FREE weekly after-school program for 4th-12th grade immigrant, asylee, and refugee girls.

Over the course of a year, participants connect with each other and themselves through outdoor experiences like hiking, rock climbing and camping. Outdoor G.I.R.L.S. is a safe space that nurtures healthy bodies, healthy minds and a sense of belonging for newcomer girls.

History

We know that outdoor experiences improve our health and wellbeing.

As stewards of outdoor programs and intentional outdoor experiences, we’re responsible for advocating, elevating, and creating pathways into the outdoors for underrepresented people so they can experience the transformative potential the wilderness provides.

A crucial part of this work is Outdoor G.I.R.L.S.

Given our strength and expertise as a facilitator of intentional outdoor experiences, we see a vital need to use our resources and connections to facilitate immersive time in nature to foster skill-building, leadership development and self-actualization for young migrant girls and their families.

Our curriculum has a socio-emotional, trauma-informed and culturally sensitive focus. The goal of our program is to foster skill-building, leadership development and a sense of belonging for our participants. We do this by initiating conversations, games and activities outside that create a safe space for sharing around identity, third cultures and migration experiences.
