The Program Coordinator position is now closed - thank you for your interest.

The Program Assistant position will remain open until mid-February with interviews conducted in early March for a position start of June 1.

Field Staff applications will be accepted through March with interviews and hiring being conducted on a rolling basis. **these dates supersede any previously posted information.**

2010 field staff training (required for all new program & field staff) will be held from June 3-8 in and around Boulder, CO.

Field staff are at the heart of our mission. The Women's Wilderness Institute strives to hire the best professional staff in the industry-women dedicated to connecting, encouraging and strengthening the women and girls who attend our courses. We are committed to offering a competitive daily rate, professional development opportunities and a positive and powerful environment in which to work.

Successful applicants must possess the following experience, skills and current certifications:

  • Wilderness First Responder - must be current for the period of employment (not in a grace period)
  • Adult CPR
  • A minimum of 2 seasons working in a mission-oriented outdoor education.
  • For Girls' Programming:
    • Experience working with youth ages 8-18 (prefer experience working in girls-only environments)
    • Able to manage a top-rope climbing site (teach belay school, helmet & harness fitting, set a "safe zone", and manage novice belayers)
    • Able to manage a group of up to 10 girls in remote mountainous environments. Knowledge of mountain hazards - weather, animals, snow fields, falling trees, etc. and ability to teach basic backpacking curriculum - camp selection, kitchen safety management, group travel, navigation, route finding, stream crossing, etc.
  • For Women's Programming:
    • Significant personal and professional experience in the skill area in which one is applying to work (moving water canoeing, backpacking, rock climbing, fly-fishing, mountain biking, telemark skiing, ice climbing, etc.)
    • Experience facilitating adult groups
    • Experience teaching adult learners
The hiring process:Applications may be completed and submitted at any time of the year; however, the following timeline will increase your likelihood of employment. Please take a look at our listings for 2009/10 Winter jobs and 2010 Summer jobs, and follow the steps below if you would like to apply.

Between October 1 and January 15:
  • Download and complete the attached field staff application form
  • Email the completed application along with your professional resume and an outdoor resume pertinent to the skill area that you are applying to instruct to hiring@womenswilderness.org
  • Download and send 3 separate copies of the recommendation form to 3 different references (preferably from prior employers and managers). Have the recommendation form returned by March 15.

Between January 5 and March 15, Jody Radtke, our Program Director, will conduct interviews on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

Internships

We offer a range of paid and unpaid internships each year. The following is a sample of our typical internship offerings. Dates are approximate; please check back for postings during the time periods listed below.

Program Coordinator:This is a 6-month seasonal full-time position starting April 1 and finishing October 1 with a stipend of $6160. Responsibilities include management of course logistics (food & gear), coordination with program interns & volunteers, pre- & post-season administrative duties (permit & licensing requirements, service projects, etc.) Additional benefits include: attendance at staff training, shadow-leading 1 to 2 girls wilderness program courses & auditing unlimited women's courses. Program Assistant:This is a 3-month seasonal 3/4-time position starting June 1 and finishing August 31 with a stipend of $1500. Responsibilities include course logistics delivery, assistance with admin or office work as necessary. Additional benefits include: attending field staff training (June 3-8, 2010), shadow-leading 1 girls wilderness program course & auditing up to 3 women's courses during the internship period. To apply, download an application which you can email to hiring@womenswilderness.org.
