What Should I Expect on a Women’s Wilderness Course? Our courses are real-life adventures, and the excitingly unpredictable nature of a real expedition makes every course different. Unlike a guided, “adventure travel vacation”, this is YOUR adventure, and you’ll be a full participant in the weekend, including cooking meals, setting up camp, and meeting as a group to plan and organize each day. You can expect some “down-time” for hanging out and talking, or journal writing time, but mostly you will be actively learning, doing, and moving.

What Do I Need to Bring? After you have enrolled, you will be sent a packet that will include a list of things to bring- from clothing to bike gear. In most cases we can loan you clothing if needed, including raingear and fleece clothes. You will need to bring your own bike, helmet, and spare tube!
Can I Bring My Bike? Can I Rent One? Yes, and yes!
You may either bring your own bike, or rent one from Over the Edge Sports in Fruita, where they are offering rentals at $100 for the 3 days. You will be renting a Rocky Mountain Element, which is a high-range, full-suspension bike. If you would like to rent from Over the Edge Sports, please call (970-858-7220) to reserve your bike as soon as possible. They will need to know how tall you are and what kind of pedals you will need. You may also bring your own pedals and seat. Helmets are available if needed. Once a reservation is made, there is no refund.
You may also ride your own bike on the course. Since you’ll be riding on trails for the duration of the course, it’s important that you are riding a mountain bike that fits you well and is in good working condition. Full suspension might make you more comfortable, but isn’t required.
If you’d like to ride your own bike but don’t want to worry about bringing it with you, you can also send it to Over the Edge, where they will rebuild your bike for you and have it ready to ride when you arrive. All information for sending your bike is located on their website, www.otesports.com, including prices and instructions. As a special for course participants, Over the Edge Sports can take an additional 10% off their listed prices for labor, but cannot reduce shipping costs.
Where Are We Going? A “Top-Ten Cycling Town” rating by Bicycling Magazine and year-round riding combine to make Fruita an international destination for mountain biking. Among the area’s many attractions is the Kokopelli Trail, a 142-mile network of beautiful trails that hugs the Colorado River from Colorado to Utah. Fruita is also home to Colorado National Monument, one of the grand landscapes of the American West complete with sheer-walled canyons, towering monoliths and colorful formations. Fruita is approximately a 5-hour drive from Boulder.
What Will We Eat? All food is included in the course cost. There is always plenty to eat, and we pack snacks for munching throughout the day. Energy bars or gels are generally not provided, so if you have a favorite feel free to bring them along. Meals are designed to accommodate a full range of preferences – from vegetarian to full meat loving divas! We can accommodate some common food allergies and dietary needs, so if you have dietary restrictions please let us know at least one week before your course.
How Will I Get to the Course Site?
The course will begin and end in Fruita, Colorado, and transportation will be provided from there to the trailhead. Optional transportation from Boulder is provided, to and from Fruita, for an additional fee of $75. The van will leave Boulder at 1:00 pm on the afternoon before the course.
If you choose to stay overnight in Fruita, you will be responsible for finding your own accommodations. The Super 8 Motel in downtown Fruita is a great place to stay. They are located at 399 Jurassic Avenue, and their phone number is 970-858-0808. To get the discount rate, let them know you are taking a course with Women’s Wilderness when you make your reservations.
What About Fitness? This course is for mountain bikers of all levels, but we recommend that you participate in aerobic activities regularly before your course, and that you are able to ride your bike for an hour at a time. There will be frequent stops while you’re riding, but you should plan to be on your bike for most of the day.
