Girls Community ProgramsAn extension of our ground-breaking Girls’ Wilderness Program, TWWI now offers two community-based programs for middle school girls, specifically crafted to meet the needs of girls who prefer to adventure closer to home. Girls on the Rise and the Girls Action Project give 6th-8th grade girls a safe, supportive opportunity to learn about themselves while making a difference in their local community.

Girls on the RiseGirls on the Rise (GOTR) helps guide 8th grade girls through their transition to high school with a seven-month after-school program. Combining expressive arts, outdoor activities with media literacy and self-discovery to support girls in developing a strong sense of self and the tools they need to succeed in high school and beyond.

Girls on the Rise participants have the opportunity to explore their hopes and fears about entering high school, while trying a wide spectrum of activities, including hip-hop dance, making art, a fashion project, creative writing, rock climbing, volunteer projects, an optional multi-day outdoor adventure. Staff and participants will create a close-knit community and a safe, trusting space where girls can discover and celebrate their true selves.

Quick facts about Girls on the Rise
  • 20 weeks of programming with weekly meetings starting in February of their 8th grade year through June and resuming September to October of 9th grade.
  • Summer break includes and optional 8-day wilderness-based adventure.
  • An opportunity to “Live from the Inside Out,” which means exploring who you are and what’s really important to you.

Girls Action ProjectGirls Action Project (GAP) is a 4-month community involvement program for 6th and 7th grade girls. GAP will help reinforce the girls’ sense of self, personal power, voice and authenticity during a time in their lives that is rich with self discovery and new experiences.

GAP girls will learn what it means to take action in their everyday lives as they work together on several community-based projects with a common theme. Girls will explore their interests, passions and relationship to the community through a variety of service projects, team-building activities and interactive discussions facilitated by women mentors.

Girls on the Rise We are now accepting enrollment for Girls on the Rise 2009.

  • DatesThursdays 4-6pm from February 19 - May 14th, plus six follow-up sessions beginning September 2009.

  • Tuition $375, financial aid is available
