Locations:
• Snowy Range of southern Wyoming -
The Snowy Range is suitable for summertime backpacking courses.
The area is high alpine, with many lakes and peaks up to 12,000’.
Routes can range from an easy 2-3 day hike, to extended routes
of up to six days. The area also has a rock climbing site,
and courses of up to eight days can combine rock climbing
with backpacking and peak ascents. The Snowy Range is approximately
a 3-hour drive from Boulder.
• Rocky Mountain National Park - An
exceptionally dramatic landscape, Rocky Mountain National
Park can be used for day hikes or backpacking trips. Numerous
peaks offer non-technical ascents. The area can also be used
for winter ski trips or overnights.
• Blue Moon Ranch - Located near Red
Feather Lakes, northwest of Fort Collins, this beautiful piece
of private land has comfortable camping, with a three-sided
shelter and a composting toilet. The land has a low ropes
course, a rock climbing site, and several hundred acres of
forest, meadows, rock outcrops, and aspen groves suitable
for wandering and exploring. This site is a good option for
groups with limited time or who want the comforts of camping
without backpacking.
• Slickrock desert canyons - Fall
and spring courses take place in the desert canyons of Utah,
in a canyon with towering walls and a year-round stream, near
Moab. Backpacking expeditions of three to eight-days can be
done here, and may be combined with a day of rock climbing
on a sandstone spire.
• Gunnison River - Four-day canoe
expeditions may be done on the Gunnison River of Western Colorado.
This is a Class I section, suitable for beginners. Side hikes
in Dominguez Canyon are a popular option.
• Boulder area - Rock climbing days
and day hikes in the Boulder area are popular with groups
that have only one or two days. A high ropes course can also
be arranged.
• Vedauwoo - This world-renowned climbing
area is between Laramie and Cheyenne, and has miles and miles
of granite domes, forests, and aspen groves. This is also
a good area for car camping and day-hiking.
Themes:
Every group has different needs, and we will work with you
ahead of time to make sure we understand the goals and needs
of your group. Courses may be focused on fun, relaxation,
and the bonding of a shared adventure, or tailored to build
teamwork or work through common issues in the group.
Participants:
Groups may be youth, adults, or mixed ages. Participants need
to be in good health, and have a level of fitness suited for
the activity and type of course that is arranged. Mixed-gender
groups are welcome. For backpacking courses, participants
must be 12 or older.
Costs:
Costs vary depending on the type, length, and location of
the course. Cost is based on a maximum group size of ten,
and varies between $600 and $1,000 per day. The cost includes
all food, gear, and loaned clothing.
The Process:
Build-Your-Own courses need to be arranged between one and
six months ahead of the desired date. The Women's Wilderness
Institute will work with a representative of the group or
organization to determine the needs, interests, and desired
dates of the group. Enrollment materials may be distributed
and collected by the organization representative, or by TWWI.
