How to Build Your Own Course
~ Marian Jordan, author, Houston, TX
Custom Courses Create your own outdoor adventure. Are you intrigued by our mission but interested in a specific objective for you, your friends, family or colleagues?
Let us help you plan an inspiring outdoor adventure! We will create for you your own outdoor experience or leadership development course. Our custom courses are open to youth, adults, and mix-gender groups. Based upon your needs, our custom courses are diverse in objectives and goals, though also fall within our mission to build courage, confidence, and leadership qualities in the individuals we serve!
Planning is half the fun! Creating a custom course is a co-creative process! You provide the participants, ideas, and needs or intentions - we provide the curriculum, framework for meeting goals, location, and we provide all of the rest!

The wilderness is an exceptional and unparalleled place to focus upon healing, growth, fun, relationships, leadership, and technical skills. Every group has different goals, and we will collaborate with you to identify the needs, intentions, expectations, and goals of your group.
The following are just a few types of custom courses we've designed in recent years:
Private Lessons:Strengthen and refine your skills or learn something completely new. Learning in one-on-one environment promotes an emotionally safe and no pressure learning environment for you to progress or challenge yourself at your own pace. We offer full and half-day lessons. Our individual instruction prices are very competitive to make the steep side of the learning curve affordable and accessible. Please inquire with your specific interest (climbing, mountain biking, backpacking tips, gear maintenance...).
Leadership Retreats:Bring together your own group of awe-inspiring individuals. We'll center the experience around your needs, hopes and expectations. Topics include: emotional intelligence; leading with your full body (listening to both logic and intuition); ethics; values and community; creating a shared vision; conflict resolution; and communication styles. We design courses for school groups, nonprofits, community organizations and business leaders, including: Girl Scouts Mile Hi Council, I Have a Dream Foundation, Naropa University, The Challenge School, Shining Mountain Waldorf School, Sigman Financial Fitness, Phoenix Mountain School, Girls Athletic Leadership School, and The Wilderness Society.
Wilderness Guided Vacations:Spend time doing yoga and rock climbing with your closest friends. Explore a new location with the support and guidance of an experienced TWWI staff. Bike or backpack for a birthday, special occasion, or family reunion. You decide what sounds like fun, the level of adventure, where, and for how long. We'll make it happen!
Corporate Team-Building:Spend a day, or several, collaborating with colleagues around a common theme or business challenge. Have fun building bonds and deepening professional relationship outside of the office. Come together for a wilderness-inspired strategy session. We'll work with you to identify objectives, customize breakthrough exercises, guide you towards new ways of thinking, and help you develop a concrete action plan.
Participants:Groups may be youth, adults, or mixed ages. Participants need to be in good health, have a tolerance or understanding of varying weather and temperature conditions, and have a level of fitness suited for the activity and type of course that is arranged. Mixed-gender groups are welcome. For youth-group backpacking courses, participants must be 12 or older.
Location:We offer dozens of breathtakingly beautiful spots to run your custom course. Here are a few ideas to get you started, and we can offer additional options in equally spectacular settings once we better understand where you'd like to go and what you hope to achieve. Is your location not listed? Ask about specific locations, and we will try our best to secure a permit for that area (though it is not guaranteed)
- Snowy Range of southern Wyoming
- Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
- Blue Moon Ranch, near Red Feather Lakes, Colorado
- Slick rock desert canyons, Utah
- Moab Region, Utah
- Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch, Colorado
- Gunnison or Green rivers, Colorado and Utah
- Left Hand Alliance National Forest, Colorado
- Boulder, CO area
- Vedauwoo, world-renowned rock climbing area near Laramie, Wyoming
Pricing:Costs vary depending on the group size, activity, length, and location of the course. Our fee includes: experienced staff, curriculum development and implementation, food, gear, possible (but not guaranteed) transportation, and loaned clothing. Reduced-rate pricing can sometimes be negotiated for under-served populations or to clients providing a portion of logistical support (ex: transportation, personal food, or gear).
Process:Custom courses can be arranged between one and six months ahead of your desired date. The Women's Wilderness Institute will work with a representative of your group or organization to co-create the course objective, all the details and logistics, and create an experience tailored to your needs.
